Here's the thing: Haas still has not locked down its complete driver line-up for 2027. That reality leaves Esteban Ocon fighting for his seat with the American team, even as speculation has surrounded him for much of the season.
Speaking in Thursday's press conference ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Haas Team Principal Ayao Komatsu addressed the situation directly. Ocon had previously stated that he was "definitely a free agent for next year," but Komatsu made it clear that no official verdict has been reached yet.
That's something that is their talent. We cannot teach them the speed, so [they] need to be fast, but really [they] need to be a team player and especially for a small team like us.
"We haven't made any decision yet but every driver has a closing point in the year to decide on options," Komatsu said. He added that Ocon's situation has not really changed and that the team is still evaluating what to do for next year.
When pressed on a timeline, Komatsu offered a specific window. "Soon, within the next couple of weeks. We've done all the evaluation, we're just waiting to summarise our findings, have a discussion internally with Gene [Haas] and make the final decision."
While Ollie Bearman is expected to be retained by the squad, the second seat remains wide open. A crop of candidates has been assessed after testing with the team in recent weeks, including reigning Formula 2 champion Leonardo Fornaroli, F2 race winner and F3 champion Rafael Camara, alongside Haas reserve drivers Jack Doohan and Ryo Hirakawa.
Komatsu laid out the exact traits the team values most in this selection process. Raw pace comes first, followed by seamless integration into a smaller outfit.
"What we're looking for in a driver, first and foremost, is the guy needs to have speed, the guy needs to be fast," Komatsu explained. "That's something that is their talent. We cannot teach them the speed, so [they] need to be fast, but really [they] need to be a team player and especially for a small team like us."
