Here is a massive career leap for James Wharton, who is officially stepping up to the FIA Formula 2 Championship for the 2027 season with Trident. It is a brilliant progression for the Australian driver, who now makes the definitive jump to the final step of the junior single-seater ladder after spending two seasons in Formula 3.
During his time in Formula 3, Wharton stacked up two victories and four podiums in total. Before entering that category, his junior résumé already boasted some seriously impressive hardware, including winning the 2023 Formula 4 UAE Championship and taking the runner-up spot in the 2024 Formula Regional European Championship.

This move actually marks a reunion for driver and squad. Wharton previously raced for the Italian team at Lusail in 2025, giving both sides a prior working relationship to build on as they prepare for the upcoming campaign.
“I really can’t put into words what this opportunity for 2027 means to me,” said Wharton. “To be able to return to Trident after racing with them in 2025 is something really special. We worked very well together and they are a very prestigious team that has done a great job over the last few seasons.”
He added, “I’m looking forward to joining the team and continuing to work hard with them over the winter, so that we can arrive in 2027 in the best possible shape.
