That is exactly where the 2026 FIM Yamaha R3 bLU cRU World Cup finds itself right now, with a razor-thin gap of just 14 points splitting the top three riders as the season enters its penultimate event alongside the Italian round of the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship.
While Cremona only made its debut on the FIM Superbike World Championship calendar in 2024, this weekend marks the very first time the R3 World Cup visits the circuit in the North of Italy. Thankfully, the grid isn't walking in completely blind, as the venue hosted the earlier pre-season test, leaving the field familiar with the 3.450km layout.
At the very top of the standings sits early championship leader Xarly Mendez of the Dominican Republic. But his grip on the trophy is under serious threat. A stunning double victory for Riichi Takahira in Magny-Cours has pulled the Japanese rider right into the fight, sitting just 11 points behind his rival as he eyes history to become the series' first Japanese champion.
Italy's Emanuele Pastore is also right there in the mix, lingering just 14 points off Mendez’s series lead. With 100 points theoretically still on the table across Cremona and the upcoming final round in Estoril, an astonishing 16 riders are still carrying a mathematical chance of capturing the title.
Further down the order, Angelo Mottola of Italy holds fourth in the standings—27 points off the lead—after taking a debut victory in the series at Donington Park. The USA's Chris Clark shares that exact same points total and remains firmly in contention. Meanwhile, standout rookie Alessandro Binder of Switzerland holds sixth in the championship as he continues his hunt for a maiden win in the series.
We will also see Valentino Knezovic back on the grid this weekend following a one-event ride in Magny-Cours, making him the only non-regular rider entered for the event.
Action gets underway on Friday with free practice and Superpole, setting the stage for the weekend's two crucial races at 10:20 CEST on Saturday and 10:10 CEST on Sunday.
