Cadillac is looking firmly toward the horizon in Formula 1, mapping out not just the heavy lifting of machine development and technical infrastructure, but also the next generation of drivers. After leaning entirely on the seasoned hands of Sergio Pérez and Valtteri Bottas for their debut campaign, the American squad is already locking down their rookie free practice plans for the future. As FormulaUno.it reports, rising star Ugo Ugochukwu has been tapped to handle the mandatory rookie FP1 outings for Cadillac in the 2027 season, giving the team a direct look at one of the sharpest young talents climbing the junior formula ladder.
Born in New York in 2007, Ugochukwu has built an impressive resume. Following an early stint inside the McLaren development setup, the American racer cut his teeth through Formula 4 and Formula Regional before stamping his name on the prestigious Macau Grand Prix in 2024. A developmental rookie campaign in Formula 3 with Prema brought a pair of podiums in 2025, but his switch to Campos Racing for 2026 proved to be the rocket fuel. That season ended with a hard-fought championship crown secured at the Madrid finale, where Ugochukwu chased down Freddie Slater to finish the year with 159 points, making history as the first American driver to claim the FIA Formula 3 title.
He is not entirely a stranger to the sheer violence of a Formula 1 machine, either. Back in June, he sampled an Alpine A524 at Monza during a Testing of Previous Cars (TPC) outing, though that running was cut short by an off at the Variante Ascari. It was a baptism by fire that introduced him to the operational demands and technical reality of modern Grand Prix cars, setting the stage for what comes next.
This signing fits cleanly into a wider strategy at Cadillac to build a pipeline for American racing talent. Colton Herta is already shouldering a heavy load for the team, spending 2026 in Formula 2 and running FP1 sessions to lock down the remaining Superlicenza points he needs, with his final rookie outing slated for Austin aboard the MAC-26. Yet the two pathways are distinctly different. Herta brings years of open-wheel experience from the United States to adapt to European machinery, while Ugochukwu is a product of the traditional European junior ladder, arriving as a reigning Formula 3 champion ready to test himself against a Grand Prix weekend.
For Cadillac, handing Ugochukwu the keys for those 2027 practice sessions is a golden opportunity. They get to drop their newly minted champion into an official session, measure his pace directly against their regular race drivers, and see how he handles the intense technical pressure of a Formula 1 garage.
