Esteban Ocon reflects on Belgium lap 1 contact with Haas teammate
It is the nightmare scenario for any team principal: two cars from the same garage colliding before the race has even properly settled into a rhythm. At the 2026 Formula 1 Belgian Grand Prix, that is exactly what unfolded for Haas at Spa-Francorchamps.
Esteban Ocon has now broken his silence on the lap 1 incident that saw him come together with his teammate, Oliver Bearman. The clash, which occurred on the legendary circuit, effectively compromised the team’s Sunday efforts immediately after the lights went out.
Ocon characterized the contact as a case of being in the "wrong place, wrong time." It is a brutal reality of wheel-to-wheel racing, especially through the opening sectors at Spa where space vanishes in the blink of an eye. For Haas, witnessing their own machines tangle is a tough pill to swallow, regardless of the circumstances.
