Formula E unveils a radical sporting shake-up for the Gen4 era

The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship is about to change forever. As the series charges head-first into the Gen4 era for the 2026/27 season, the organizers are ditching the traditional double-header routine in favor of something much more tactical. Teams will no longer just tweak their cars; they will have to master two distinct disciplines every weekend.

Here is how it works: the weekend will be split between the 'E-PrixUnleashed' and the standard 'E-Prix'. The former is a 30-minute sprint focusing on raw, high-downforce speed, complete with a condensed 6-minute ATTACK MODE window. The latter is a 45-minute endurance test where the cars switch to a low-downforce setup. Efficiency is the name of the game here, enforced by a mandatory PIT BOOST stop and an 8-minute ATTACK MODE.

It is a fascinating gamble, especially with the added incentive in qualifying. Starting in 2026/27, drivers who fight their way into the Duels will be rewarded with championship points based on how far they advance. With the points system for the races themselves remaining on the classic 25-to-1 scale, the pressure to perform during every single session has reached a fever pitch.
