General Motors masters the streets of Detroit
It was a dream afternoon for General Motors in the heart of their home city. Earl Bamber, pushing his No. 31 Cadillac Whelen Cadillac V-Series.R to the limit, didn't just snag pole—he destroyed the two-year-old track record with a blistering 1:05.313 lap. On this tight 1.645-mile street course, he was one of five drivers to dip under the 1:06 barrier, showing true mastery of the concrete canyons surrounding the Renaissance Center.
While Bamber celebrated his first-ever prototype pole, the scene behind him turned chaotic. A late-session incident involving the Porsche Penske Motorsport entries—with Felipe Nasr running wide and Kevin Estre clipping the wall—ended proceedings early, leaving Louis Deletraz to secure a Cadillac front-row lockout in the No. 40 Wayne Taylor Racing machine. It was a beautiful display of balance and speed for the Cadillac camp.
Not to be outdone, Alexander Sims put the Corvette Racing by Pratt Miller Motorsports entry on top in the GTD PRO class. As Bamber noted, the team is clicking perfectly with this challenging layout. Sitting just six points behind in the standings, Bamber and co-driver Jack Aitken look poised to carry this momentum into Saturday’s race, provided they can navigate the inevitable surprises this street circuit has in store.
