But George Russell was anything but hesitant, putting together a stunning lap to comprehensively beat Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc to pole position for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix by a commanding 0.837s. The Mercedes driver was ecstatic after the session, celebrating what he rightly called “the perfect lap.”
Looking at the timing screens, you might think it was a walk in the park. Russell topped every single segment of the hour, but the reality on track was fierce. He faced consistently tight competition from the Scuderia, Red Bull, and McLaren all afternoon. With his team mate Kimi Antonelli watching from the sidelines after a damaging error in Q1, the battle for the front row was wide open when Q3 rolled around. Yet the Briton kept finding time, improving with every single run to clock an unbeatable 1m 42.526s and secure his fifth P1 start of the season.

“It’s been a while, so it definitely feels good,” he said. “It’s probably the biggest margin of my whole career, even including F2, F3 days, so the lap felt really sweet.”
It was a chaotic session full of lock-ups, frantic trips to the run-off areas, and disruptive yellow flags. While others fell victim to the chaos, Russell threaded the needle. He noted that Max Verstappen had looked very fast all weekend, though a late yellow flag triggered by Lando Norris robbed the Dutchman of his final chance to reply. Russell also caught a helpful break on his flyer, running in a good gap behind Isack Hadjar to pick up a valuable slipstream down the back straight worth another tenth or two.
Even with such a massive advantage in his pocket, nobody takes anything for granted at the Baku City Circuit. Russell knows all too well that race day can tear up the form book in an instant as he chases his first victory since Round 8 in Austria.
“I’m feeling good. I think we’re in a great place to go for the win,” Russell said, keeping a wary eye on the scarlet car starting right behind him. “But of course, this is Baku and anything can happen. Of course, Charles is going to be motivated to probably throw one down the inside at Turn 1, but whatever happens, I feel confident that we can go for the win.”
