Jake Dennis claims emotional win as Sanya returns to the calendar
The Sanya E-Prix was a wild, heat-soaked affair that ended in a beautiful, albeit somber, victory for Andretti’s Jake Dennis. Securing his eighth career win, Dennis was rightfully emotional, dedicating the result to his father-in-law after a difficult week at home. It was a historic day for the team, which saw Dennis and teammate Felipe Drugovich lock out the front row and lead for much of the race, marking their first 1-2 finish in 159 race starts.
Drama, however, was lurking at every corner. A post-race five-second penalty for contact with Pascal Wehrlein relegated Drugovich to fifth, while Pepe Martí of CUPRA KIRO was promoted to second—a career-best result after starting 18th. It was a disaster for the championship leaders: Mitch Evans, Oliver Rowland, Edoardo Mortara, and Wehrlein all failed to score a single point in a chaotic sequence of shunts, mechanical failures, and sanctions.
Formula E’s return to this street circuit after six years was a genuine test of machine and man. DS PENSKE managed to scrape together double points with Maximilian Guenther and Taylor Barnard, while Nyck de Vries took a third-place finish for Mahindra Racing. With Shanghai on the horizon, the grid is already looking toward the next battles.
