Opel finalises 2026/27 line-up with Mitch Evans signing

Here is a massive move for the future of Formula E. Opel has officially completed its 2026/27 line-up by securing the services of Mitch Evans, bringing a heavyweight driver into the fold for the new German manufacturer team.

At thirty-two years old, the New Zealander arrives with a staggering record: sixteen victories, the most in the racing series, backed by ten years of experience. Opel GSE views the pairing of Evans and rookie Théo Pourchaire as the ultimate blend of top-tier speed and youthful promise, setting clear intentions to fight at the front right from the lights out.

Opel Motorsport Director and Team Principal Jörg Schrott made no secret of how badly they wanted him, calling Evans their preferred candidate from the beginning and their dream team addition. Schrott noted that Evans was deliberately looking for a new challenge after spending so many years with another manufacturer, viewing the partnership as a clear message that the brand is joining the World Championship to run at the very front.

For Evans himself, the timing couldn't be better. Following a dramatic final weekend in London where a Drivers' World Championship title was narrowly missed, the veteran is eager for a fresh start. Calling the leap to the GEN4 cars the perfect moment, Evans emphasised that the team's ambition matches his own unfulfilled title goals in the category, stating he wants to bring his decade of experience to bear alongside Opel and Théo.

Beyond the racing garage, Evans already made his first official appearance in Opel colours as a surprise guest at the international media drive for the battery-electric Opel Corsa GSE. The Rüsselsheim-based manufacturer is deliberately tying its halo motorsport project to production vehicles, using Formula E as a grand stage for its high-performance models following the Mokka GSE and the upcoming Corsa GSE.

The complete squad also features Test and Development Driver Sophia Flörsch alongside Evans and Pourchaire. The next major milestone on the calendar arrives this autumn, with Opel set to pull the wraps off the final design of the race car for the 2026/27 season at the Paris Motor Show on 12 October 2026, building on their earlier world premiere of the Opel GSE 27FE prototype at Le Castellet.
