Ryan Hunter-Reay takes on sporting director role at Arrow McLaren
It is official: Ryan Hunter-Reay is joining the front office. On June 6, Arrow McLaren announced the 2014 Indianapolis 500 winner and 2012 champion as their new sporting director, a massive move for an organization that clearly values his two decades of technical acumen. He has been hanging around the garage since the St. Petersburg season opener, so this transition feels like a natural evolution for a veteran of 296 IndyCar Series starts.
Working under the watchful eye of Team Principal Tony Kanaan, Hunter-Reay is tasked with the tall order of connecting engineering, the driver lineup, and the team's commercial growth. It is a dual-purpose role—maximizing on-track pace while acting as a key ambassador. As Kanaan put it, they are looking to replicate the success of their 2010 collaboration to help push the team toward championship contention and that elusive Triple Crown.
Hunter-Reay brings a mountain of experience to the table, including his 18 career wins and 1,610 laps led. While he suited up for the team for the 110th Indianapolis 500 last month, his immediate focus is now firmly on the boardroom and the pit wall. The team has noted that a decision regarding the driver for their fourth entry in the 2027 Indianapolis 500 will come at a later date.
