Xavi Artigas hauled himself right back into the championship fight with a stunning win in Race 1 at the Circuito de Jerez - Angel Nieto, Andalucia, claiming a 25-point swing in the FIM Sportbike World Championship. The #34 rider took the victory by just 0.096s ahead of Ferre Fleerackers, while Alvaro Fuertes grabbed a maiden WorldSPB podium on home soil. Meanwhile, the title fight took an explosive turn when championship leader David Salvador tangled with Carter Thompson late in the race.
Artigas wasted no time jumping from third on the grid to lead through the opening sector, immediately shadowed by Salvador. The positions swapped constantly within a fierce lead group of five before Artigas pulled off a sensational move from fourth to first at Turn 6 on Lap 6. Salvador fought back to reclaim the spot a lap later, holding a four-tenths advantage at the start of Lap 8. But the pressure boiled over at Turn 13 on Lap 9, where Salvador and Thompson made contact. The #38 tumbled into the gravel, though he managed to rejoin and limp home 22nd. Artigas cruised to his fourth win of the season, turning the tables to hold a 13-point lead over Salvador heading into Race 2.
In the chaos of that Turn 13 incident, Fleerackers seized his chance to move into the lead group and secured back-to-back rostrums. Fuertes joined him in the podium fight, holding onto P3 at the end of the 11-lap race just 0.128s behind the winner. Pepe Osuna followed in fourth to cap off a dream home round for the Deza-Box 77 Racing Team with a third and fourth finish. Antonio Torres crossed the line in fifth, and his points haul was enough to officially secure the Teams' Championship for Prodina Kawasaki this year.
Further back, Thompson salvaged sixth place after taking a Long Lap Penalty on the final lap, finishing ahead of Harrison Dessoy in seventh. Gonzalo Sanchez claimed eighth on home soil, while Taiyo Aksu rode his Honda to ninth for his second points finish of the year and a season-best result, helping five of the seven competing manufacturers land inside the top ten. Elia Bartolini rounded out the top ten for CM Triumph Factory Racing.
Before the racing even got properly underway, a brutal Warm Up lap crash at Turn 1 wiped out Jeffrey Buis, Julian Correa, and Fenton Seabright. None of the three could start the race, and the incident was slated for post-race investigation by the FIM WorldSBK Stewards. Buis and Seabright were both sent to the medical centre, where the #6 was declared unfit with a dislocated shoulder while Seabright was cleared. Bruno Ieraci also retired early after bringing his machine into the pits.
Attrition claimed several other runners during the 11 laps. Hugo de Cancellis retired after just a couple of circuits, and Luca Agostinelli crashed out at Turn 1 on Lap 6. Mattia Martella also parked his bike, while Matteo Vannucci went down at Turn 10 on Lap 7 while running inside the top ten. Alessandro Di Persio retired halfway through and was checked at the medical centre before being declared fit, and Gabin Cazard suffered an early exit after crashing at Turn 5.
