As Motorsport.com reports, Toyota has rushed through crucial updates to both the hydraulics and software of its Le Mans-winning TR010 Hybrid following a brutal round at Austin. That weekend slipped away painfully when the #7 machine driven by Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi, and Nyck de Vries suffered a hydraulic failure just ten minutes from the checkered flag while leading the Lone Star Le Mans. Meanwhile, the sister #8 car shared by Sebastien Buemi, Brendon Hartley, and Ryo Hirakawa saw its own race unravel due to a pitlane speed penalty.
Technical director David Floury confirmed that the team has addressed both problems despite the tight turnaround between events. The hydraulic system now features a brand new component, while the pitlane speeding issue on the #8 car was traced back to an unusual software bug. According to Floury, a rare combination of factors triggered the glitch during a standard pit launch, though that specific sequence of code has now been thoroughly patched to prevent any repeat.
That disaster in Austin dealt a heavy blow to their championship buffer, leaving the #7 crew tied on points with the #20 BMW drivers Robin Frijns and Rene Rast. The hypercar title fight remains completely wide open, with the #8 Toyota, the #15 BMW, and both Ferrari 499Ps still very much in the hunt. For Nyck de Vries, the pain of losing a deserved result has quickly given way to the urgency of the championship battle as the series arrives at Toyota's home turf.
Historically, this venue has been a fortress for the manufacturer, though recent years have presented tougher challenges. While the #8 car topped the timesheets in FP1, the TR010 Hybrids could only manage P8 and P13 during FP2. But single-lap pace has never been the true measure of this beast, as the machine famously comes alive over longer race stints. With the season fast approaching its final stretch, the championship fight hangs in the balance, and Toyota is banking on its hastily engineered fixes to keep them in the hunt until the very end.
