Here's the thing about Baku: it will chew you up and spit you out if you give it half a chance. Rafael Villagómez stared disaster right in the face during Feature Race 1, got tangled up in a multi-car collision at Turn 3, and somehow lived to tell the tale with an eighth-place finish.
Starting from 16th on the grid, the Van Amersfoort Racing driver kept his nose clean early on before the chaos erupted at the Safety Car restart. While the other drivers caught up in the Turn 3 crash were forced to retire on the spot, the Mexican driver managed to drag his wounded machine back into the pitlane. "At one point I was out of the race. But the team did great. I just stayed in the car and that's allowed," Villagómez said. With marshals telling him to get out of the car around a hundred times, he trusted the radio instructions from his VAR crew, changed a front wing that was wedged under the car, and rejoined from the back of the pack in 14th.
What followed was a stunning display of damage limitation. Villagómez immediately dispatched Emerson Fittipaldi, then sliced through the rest of the field to cross the line in ninth. That position became eighth once a five-second penalty applied to Kush Maini took effect.
It capped off a wild day where the VAR driver felt misfortune had hounded him, noting that earlier qualifying sessions were ruined by traffic and yellow flags at Turn 1 after being stuck leaving the pit lane. Yet the race pace was undeniably there all along. Looking ahead to the final Feature Race on Sunday, Villagómez is eyeing more points from the chaotic, 90-degree cornered street circuit where anything can genuinely happen.
