Here's the thing about racing at home: you either fold under the pressure, or you put on a show. Thankfully, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing chose the latter, locking out the top two spots in FP1 at the Qatar Airways Grand Prix of Austria thanks to Pedro Acosta and Red Bull KTM Tech3 rider Pol Espargaro. It marks the factory's first 1-2 in any session since Practice at the 2025 Catalan GP, and honestly, it is a gorgeous sight. Espargaro's session wasn't entirely straightforward either, featuring a small crash at Turn 4 that somehow didn't derail the momentum.
Behind the orange machine at the top, Jorge Martin (Aprilia Racing) muscled his way into third place despite battling a technical issue during the session. That is a proper fighter's effort, especially considering Martin arrives at the Red Bull Ring level on points with Marc Marquez (Ducati Lenovo Team) at the top of the overall standings. Marquez himself slotted into fourth-fastest, keeping the championship battle tighter than a drum.
Let us talk about the numbers because Acosta's 1:29.851 lap time was a couple of tenths faster than Espargaro's best effort. In fact, the young star was the only rider to dip their toe into the 1:29 bracket on Friday morning. Martin and Marc Marquez were both three tenths away from Acosta’s benchmark, while fifth-place Johann Zarco (Castrol Honda LCR) sat half a second adrift from the FP1 summit.
Further down the order, Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia Racing) kickstarted his weekend with a P6 finish as the Italian aims to bounce back from his Sunday error a few days ago in Misano. Meanwhile, staying on the subject of Aprilia, Ai Ogura (SuperFiles Trackhouse MotoGP Team) began his injury comeback with a P19 finish, ending the morning 1.4 seconds shy of Acosta.
That is FP1 in the books, and the sheer closeness of the field is just wild, with the fastest 16 riders split by under a second. The all-important Practice session is looming at 3 pm local time, and you know it is going to be fierce.
