Being a Formula 1 Team Principal is one of the most demanding roles in the paddock as each squad strives to meet their respective goals. With the season in full swing, the grid is led by 11 distinct team bosses.
At McLaren, Andrea Stella stepped up as Team Principal in December 2022 following a long career that included working with Michael Schumacher at Ferrari from 2002 onwards and serving as race engineer for Kimi Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso. Since taking the top job, Stella and McLaren have claimed back-to-back Teams’ Championships in 2024 and 2025, plus the Drivers’ Championship crown with Lando Norris last season.
Toto Wolff has been at the helm of Mercedes since 2013, making him the longest-serving current Team Principal on the grid. After investing in Williams in 2009, the Austrian became a Managing Partner at Mercedes in 2013 with a 30% stake. Wolff headed the Silver Arrows through their dominant run between 2014 and 2020, plus the 2021 teams' crown, and after climbing to P2 in 2025, Mercedes have been the ones to beat in 2026.
Red<bos>4 starts a season with a name other than Christian Horner as Team Principal for the first time following the Briton's exit last July. Laurent Mekies has stepped into the role after starting his F1 journey with Arrows in 2001, working with Minardi and Toro Rosso, spending time at the FIA, and serving as Racing Director at Ferrari before moving to the then-called AlphaTauri outfit for 2024. Mekies was called up to replace Horner midway through 2025.
Fred Vasseur heads Ferrari for a fourth season in 2026 after taking charge at the start of the 2023 campaign. Prior to F1, Vasseur co-founded ART Grand Prix and led Renault and Sauber/Alfa Romeo, and he has overseen the signing of Lewis Hamilton for 2025.
James Vowles took the reins at Williams at the start of 2023, having previously worked as Chief Strategist for Brawn GP's 2009 title win and held a senior strategy role during Mercedes' championship run. Vowles led the Grove-based outfit to a fifth-place finish in the 2025 Teams’ Championship.
Alan Permane moved to Team Principal at Racing Bulls following a Red Bull reshuffle midway through 2025. Permane spent decades with the Enstone-based outfit from its Benetton days through to 2023, before returning to F1 with Racing Bulls as Racing Director in 2024.
Adrian Newey joins Aston Martin as Managing Technical Partner in 2025 and Team Principal in 2026 following an organisational restructure, adding to a legendary design career with Williams, McLaren, and Red Bull.
Ayao Komatsu is in his third season as Team Principal at Haas, having worked his way up from engineering roles at BAR and Renault before joining Haas in 2016 and taking over the top job at the start of 2024.
At Audi, ex-Ferrari chief Mattia Binotto heads the project as Team Principal following Jonathan Wheatley's departure in March 2026. Former F1 racer Allan McNish serves as Racing Director, heading trackside operations and the Driver Development Programme.
Following Oliver Oakes' exit in May 2025, Flavio Briatore took over duties as Executive Advisor at Alpine, with Steve Nielsen hired as Managing Director to run day-to-day operations.
Finally, Cadillac debuted as the 11th team on the grid in 2026, initially led by Graeme Lowdon before Marcin Budkowski took over as Team Principal ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix in August.
