Formula 1 has spent a decade racing around the streets of Azerbaijan's Baku City Circuit, a venue that has consistently delivered wild and unpredictable racing. Following a relatively tame debut in 2016, the drama properly ignited in 2017 when Sebastian Vettel tapped the back of title rival Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes during a Safety Car period. Convinced Hamilton had brake-tested him, a frustrated Vettel pulled alongside and made contact with the Mercedes. The stewards handed Vettel a stop-and-go penalty, while Hamilton was forced into an unscheduled stop due to a loose headrest.
That same 2017 race produced a stunning drive from Daniel Ricciardo. Starting 10th after a qualifying crash and dropping further back due to early debris in his brakes, the Aussie pulled off a sensational triple overtake at the restart, out-braking Lance Stroll, Felipe Massa, and Nico Hulkenberg into Turn 1. Benefiting from the chaos ahead, Ricciardo inherited the lead and held it to the finish.
Intra-team warfare took center stage in 2018 when Red Bull teammates Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen spent laps squabbling over fourth place. After multiple near-misses and position swaps, Ricciardo got a run on the inside, Verstappen moved to defend, and Ricciardo rear-ended the sister car to eliminate both on the spot. Later in that same race, Romain Grosjean was running sixth under the Safety Car when his VF-18 suddenly pitched right and hit the wall. A devastated Grosjean explained he had accidentally bumped a switch that locked the rear wheels with rearward brake balance. Valtteri Bottas suffered even more heartbreak late in that race, cruising toward victory in his Mercedes W09 until his right-right tyre let go on the beginning of Lap 49 of 51, destroying his winless year's best shot at the top step.
Ferrari's Charles Leclerc fell victim to the treacherous circuit in 2019. Having gone fastest in Q1, he pushed too hard in Q2 and buried his car into the narrow left-hander at Turn 8, famously radioing his engineer to say, "I am stupid… I am stupid." Although Leclerc went on to secure pole positions in Azerbaijan in 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024, race-day victory has continued to elude him.
High-speed tyre failures struck again in 2021. Max Verstappen was leading a Red Bull 1-2 and poised to win when his tyre let go on the 46th lap of 51, sending his RB16B into a massive impact on the pit straight. Following a red flag and a standing restart, Lewis Hamilton seized second place behind Sergio Perez, but accidentally engaged the wrong brake bias setting, locking up his front-left tyre at Turn 1 and tumbling to the rear of the field.
More chaos unfolded in 2024 when Sergio Perez, running third in the closing stages, challenged Charles Leclerc for second on the penultimate lap. The scrap allowed Carlos Sainz through, and as Perez and Sainz went wheel-to-wheel along the straight, they tangled and slammed into the wall. The circuit's unforgiving nature reached a stunning crescendo in 2025 with an astonishing six red flags during Qualifying, caused by Alex Albon, Nico Hulkenberg, Franco Colapinto, Oliver Bearman, Charles Leclerc, and Oscar Piastri. That session ended Leclerc's streak of Baku poles and set up a miserable weekend for Oscar Piastri, who crashed out just six corners into the race.
