Alonso Lopez (ITALJET Gresini Moto2) delivered a masterclass at MotorLand Aragon, converting pole position into a stunning, flawless victory across 19 laps. It was a beautiful sight—a lights-to-flag masterwork that brought the Spaniard his first win since the 2024 Qatar GP. And let me tell you, that tastes sweet after he fractured his hand just a few weeks ago.
From his first pole position in three years, Lopez grabbed the holeshot with absolute ease. Behind him, the early order held firm as Izan Guevara (BLU CRU Pramac Yamaha Moto2), Daniel Holgado (CFMOTO Inde Aspar Team), and Gonzalez maintained their positions, while Collin Veijer (Red Bull KTM Ajo) jumped ahead of Alonso for fifth. Further down, Senna Agius (Liqui Moly Dynavolt Intact GP) and Ivan Ortola (QJMOTOR – Reverte – MSI) launched aggressive charges from deep on the grid to instantly climb into seventh and eighth. By lap 5, the top nine riders—rounded out by Angel Piqueras (QJMOTOR – Reverte – MSI)—were blanketed by just over two and a half seconds, before Lopez dropped the hammer and pushed his gap over Guevara past the half-second mark.
Then the race truly caught fire. On lap 9, Veijer wrestled third place away from Holgado at Turn 16, paving the way for Alonso to pounce on Gonzalez at Turn 1. That scrap forced Gonzalez off-line at Turn 2, allowing Agius to swoop through. Alonso then ruthlessly repeated the move on teammate Holgado a lap later to snatch fourth, while Agius and Gonzalez soon demoted Holgado further down the order. That left a ferocious leading quartet of Lopez, Guevara, Veijer, and Alonso clear by over a second.
Drama struck when Veijer suffered a fast crash at Turn 4 just after losing third to Alonso, ending his podium dreams and scrambling the pack. With five laps remaining, Gonzalez found himself tumbling to seventh following a near-miss with teammate Agius. Up front, Lopez looked untouchable, managing his tyres brilliantly to lead Guevara by 0.7s with two laps to go, with Alonso lurking right behind.
The final lap was an absolute thriller. Lopez cruised clear by 0.6s, but behind him, Guevara and Alonso went to absolute war. Alonso lunged his Kalex-Triumph up the inside of Guevara’s Boscoscuro-Triumph at Turn 14, but ran just a fraction too hot, enabling Guevara to cut back underneath and snatch second place by 0.8s at the flag. It was a vital, hard-fought 20 points for Guevara, and a massive redemption arc for Alonso following his disastrous Silverstone weekend.
Further back, classy drives from Agius and Ortola sealed fourth and fifth, eating into the championship lead of Gonzalez, whose advantage at the top drops to 32.5 points heading into the Misano-Red Bull Ring double header. Holgado crossed the line in seventh, while Deniz Öncü (ELF Marc VDS Racing Team) quietly converted an 18th-place grid slot into eighth, matching his season-best result from Silverstone. Alex Escrig (KLINT Racing Team) recovered from an early off-track nudge to take ninth, and Adrian Huertas (Italtrans Racing Team) completed the top ten. The championship just keeps tightening up, and thankfully, we are bound for Misano in less than two weeks.
