That is a gap you simply do not see in Moto2. A margin of 0.541 seconds? Unreal. That is exactly how thoroughly Daniel Holgado of the CFMOTO RCB Aspar Team dismantled the competition at the PETRONAS Grand Prix of Malaysia, posting a blistering 2:02.875 during the Q2 session to secure pole position in utterly dominant fashion.
Behind the flying Spaniard, rookie Angel Piqueras of QJMOTOR – MSI carved out a career-best P2 to lock down the middle of the front row. Joining them there is title-hunting Izan Guevara of BLU CRU Pramac Yamaha Moto2, grabbing P3. How significant that front-row start ends up being for Guevara remains to be seen, but the stakes are massive.
World Championship leader Manuel Gonzalez of Liqui Moly Dynavolt Intact GP heads into Sunday's race riding wounded following a heavy crash on Friday, leaving him with a mountain to climb from P9 on the grid. That puts the pressure firmly on the title contender sitting just 5.5 points away to capitalize on Sunday.
Meanwhile, David Alonso of the CFMOTO RCB Aspar Team front-rowed the second row after fighting his way through the grueling Q1 session. He is joined on Row 2 by Alonso Lopez of ITALJET Gresini Moto2 and Dutchman Collin Veijer of Red Bull KTM Ajo to round out a rapid trio.
Alex Escrig of the KLINT Racing Team also successfully navigated the Q1 jungle, claiming a strong P7 in Q2. He sits directly ahead of Daniel Muñoz of the Italtrans Racing Team on the third row, with both machines parked right in front of Gonzalez. Rounding out the immediate neighborhood of the championship leader is the rider sitting third in the standings, Ivan Ortola of QJMOTOR – MSI, who starts directly behind him.
