For the second time in 2026, David Alonso of the CFMOTO RCB Aspar Team took victory in Moto2 at the PETRONAS Grand Prix of Malaysia, fending off teammate Daniel Holgado in brutally hot conditions. Despite a huge moment in the closing stages, the Colombian managed to hold off his teammate to deliver a dream 1-2 finish for the Aspar squad.
Third place went to rookie star Angel Piqueras riding for QJMOTOR – MSI, marking a maiden podium in the intermediate class for the Spaniard after an injury-hit first campaign. In the battle for the Moto2 title, Izan Guevara claimed fourth for BLU CRU Pramac Yamaha Moto2, while Manuel Gonzalez took fifth for Liqui Moly Dynavolt Intact GP. That result brings the gap down to just 3.5 points between the pair at the top of the standings.
Holgado launched cleanly from pole position to take the holeshot, while teammate Alonso jumped ahead of Guevara into the opening corner. From ninth on the grid, Gonzalez gained two places to seventh, and front-row starter Piqueras held his position in second. By Lap 2, Alonso passed Piqueras to establish an Aspar 1-2 at the front of the field. Gonzalez continued his charge, carving past Daniel Muñoz of the Italtrans Racing Team and Alonso Lopez of the ITALJET Gresini Moto2 squad to sit fifth by the end of Lap 4.
The lead changed hands on Lap 6 when Alonso dived up the inside of Holgado at Turn 4. By Lap 9, Alonso had stretched his advantage to 1.1 seconds, with Holgado pressured by Piqueras. Guevara sat 0.9 seconds back from his compatriots, while his gap to Gonzalez had grown to 3.3 seconds.
Alonso looked to be cruising until a huge rear-end moment at the apex of Turn 14 with just over three laps remaining allowed Holgado to close right back onto his rear wheel. However, Alonso responded by rebuilding a four-tenths gap, extending it to 1.1 seconds as they started the final lap. He held on to secure his second win of the season.
Guevara's fourth place marked his first finish off the overall podium since Misano, allowing him to chip away slightly at Gonzalez's championship lead, though Gonzalez salvaged a crucial fifth place. Behind them, Adrian Huertas secured a career-best sixth for the Italtrans Racing Team. Collin Veijer of Red Bull KTM Ajo overtook Ivan Ortola of QJMOTOR – MSI on the final lap to take seventh, leaving Ortola eighth. Rounding out the top ten were Celestino Vietti of the BETA Tools SpeedRS Team in ninth and Alex Escrig of the KLINT Racing Team in tenth.
Now, the championship moves on to Qatar with the title fight narrowed down to just 3.5 points.
