Here is the news we have all been waiting for: Australia has a brand-new premier class star on the way. Senna Agius is officially stepping up to MotoGP in 2027, locking in a seat with Red Bull KTM Tech3 as the fifth rookie joining the grid for the championship's fresh 850cc era. His arrival lines up with a visit to the brand-new Adelaide Street Circuit, and it places him alongside an elite group of Australian greats including Jack Miller, Casey Stoner, Mick Doohan, and Wayne Gardner.
That path to the top started with early junior success in the Idemitsu Moto4 Asia Cup, before a move to Europe in 2020 for two seasons in the Moto3 Junior World Championship. When Agius jumped to Moto2 machinery, everything clicked. His 2022 Moto2 European Championship rookie campaign brought instant podiums in Portugal, a dominant double showing in Barcelona, and runner-up honours in the standings.
Then came 2023, where Agius simply dominated by taking five wins from the opening six races. Despite a Friday highside at Barcelona throwing a temporary roadblock in his path, he bounced back with three more wins to claim the 2023 Moto2 European Champion crown, paving the way for wildcard and replacement rides.
The progression continued as Agius teamed up with Intact GP for the 2024 Moto2 World Championship. A solid rookie season featured a breakthrough maiden podium at the Australian GP, locking in eighteenth in the standings. Things went up another gear in 2025 with podiums in Thailand and Spain, followed by a headline-grabbing win at the British GP and another emotional victory at Phillip Island in front of his home crowd, lifting him to tenth in the championship standings.
A fierce title challenge followed as Agius took a win in the USA, another victory in Spain, and podium finishes in Hungary and the Netherlands. Sitting third in the championship at the halfway point, Guenther Steiner had seen enough, securing the Australian's signature for a 2027 premier class contract.
Agius will step into the Tech3 garage alongside MotoGP veteran Luca Marini, who arrives as a development rider as Enea Bastianini and Maverick Viñales move on. Steiner's new line-up blends experience with fresh blood for the upcoming regulatory changes.
When the lights go out, the #81 machine will not be alone in the rookie fight. Agius faces off against fellow newcomers David Alonso, Daniel Holgado, Izan Guevara, and Nicolo Bulega in the battle for rookie of the year honours, with all five riders set to sample MotoGP machinery in anger at the post-season Valencia Test.
