Fernandez fends off Martin in Mugello gold medal pursuit
Raul Fernandez made it look easy at Mugello this Saturday, taking a Tissot Sprint gold medal after fending off Jorge Martin. It was a beautiful display of control from the Trackhouse MotoGP Team rider, who crossed the line 1.2s ahead of his rival to secure the win. The Italian marque enjoyed a stunning 1-2 on their home turf, with local hero Fabio Di Giannantonio rounding out the podium for Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team.
The race saw chaos from the start, as Marc Marquez grabbed a brilliant holeshot for the Ducati Lenovo Team before being overtaken by a hungry pack. While pole-sitter Marco Bezzecchi struggled with a sluggish start, falling back to P6, Fernandez and Martin established their pace at the front. By the end of Lap 3, the pair were already clear, while Di Giannantonio fought hard to claim third place after a beautiful pass at Arrabbiata 1.
Martin tried his best to pressure the leader, closing the gap to under half a second with three laps remaining. But Fernandez stayed ice-cool. He responded on the penultimate lap to push the margin back out, sealing the victory with a flawless ride. It was a rough outing for some, with Enea Bastianini and Franco Morbidelli both ending their Sprint in the gravel at Turn 10, but for the front-runners, the stage is now set for a massive Sunday at the Italian Grand Prix.
