Formula E makes its long-awaited return to the Sanya Street Circuit
It has been seven years, but the wait is finally over. Formula E returns to the Sanya Street Circuit for Round 11 of the 2025/26 season, and it is a fascinating challenge. This is the first time the GEN3 machines will tackle this track, and with only eight drivers on the current grid having previous experience here, the uncertainty is absolutely delicious.
The layout has undergone changes since we last visited in the 2018/19 season. The first three corners are now a series of left-handers, leading into a wide hairpin at Turn 5. The circuit remains a fast one, but it is the technical demand of the hairpins and the long straights—like the run from Turn 7 to Turn 9—that will define the race. It is a track built for overtaking, and it promises to be a very quick lap indeed.
Memories of that last visit are still vivid, particularly for Jean-Eric Vergne (now Citroën Racing), who secured a race win here in Season 5 after catching Oliver Rowland of Nissan off guard. That performance was vintage Vergne, showcasing the energy management skills that eventually carried him to the drivers’ championship that same year. Whether history repeats itself or new faces emerge, this weekend in Sanya is not to be missed.
