Look at this: Izan Guevara (BLU CRU Pramac Yamaha Moto2) has put his machine right at the front of the grid for Sunday. The Spaniard laid down a stunning 2:01.483s flyer early in the session, and that single lap stood tall against everything the rest of the field could throw at it, sealing his third career Moto2 pole position at the Qatar Airways Grand Prix of Great Britain.
Alonso Lopez (ITALJET Gresini Moto2) gave it absolutely everything, finishing just three tenths off the #28 to grab second place on the grid. That late charge from Lopez was agonizingly close, and it looked for a moment like he might snatch the top spot away, but his pace simply dropped off in the final sector of his final lap and he had to settle for P2. Right behind him, Ivan Ortola (QJMOTOR-Biolec-MSI) locked down third to complete the front row.
Now, qualifying was far from a quiet affair. Joe Roberts (OnlyFans American Racing Team), Tony Arbolino (REDS Fantic Racing), along with Momoven Idrofoglia RW Racing Teammates Ayumu Sasaki and Zonta van den Goorbergh punched their tickets into Q2 as the four quickest through Q1. But the drama exploded with just under 9 minutes left in Q2 when the #84 tangled with Mario Aji (Idemitsu Honda Team Asia) on the run into Turn 11. Both riders hit the deck, bringing out the red flags to clear a mess of debris from the circuit. Filip Salač (OnlyFans American Racing Team) had also found the gravel just before that red-flag-inciting incident, cutting his session short though he still managed a 2'02.278s time good for P6.
Once the track went green again, Guevara's early benchmark remained untouchable. Manuel Gonzalez (LIQUI MOLY Dynavolt Intact GP) slotted into P4 to lead the second row, sitting just over six tenths away from his compatriot on pole. Chasing 'Manugas' across the line came Daniel Munoz (Italtrans Racing Team), who has his eyes fixed firmly on a second podium of the season.
Row three gets underway with Daniel Holgado (CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team), who was a mere 0.018s further back after topping the timesheets on Friday. He will be hunting for a strong Sunday to pinch fourth in the Championship from his teammate David Alonso, who faces a tough climb down the order after missing the cut in Q1. Alex Escrig (KLINT Racing Team) took P8 by a tiny 0.015s margin behind Holgado, while Roberts and Sasaki rounded out the top ten after their successful Q1 progression.
That Silverstone shootout goes down on Sunday. Lights out at 11:15 local time (UTC +1).
