Here is the thing about street circuits: they demand absolute perfection, and they hand out brutal punishments for the slightest misjudgment. Kimi Antonelli found that out the hard way during qualifying at the Baku City Circuit, bringing his session to an abrupt and painful halt.
The Mercedes driver was just starting a Q1 lap when he thumped the inside concrete wall at Turn 1. The impact wrecked the front-left corner of his machine, forcing him to park up on track on the direct instructions of his Race Engineer, Peter Bonnington.
Despite the early exit, an earlier lap time from the opening minutes kept him officially through to Q2. But that was cold comfort as he watched the rest of the session from the sidelines, ultimately classifying down in 16th position.
Speaking after the session, a dejected Antonelli didn't mince words about his error, calling it a very unnecessary and very stupid mistake so early on. He admitted misjudging the grip level, which felt completely different compared to his previous lap, describing the whole ordeal as a good way to come back to Earth and a reminder to stay completely on top of things.
While Antonelli leads fellow Mercedes driver George Russell by 81 points heading into the 51-lap race, his team mate seized the absolute maximum out of the afternoon. George Russell charged to pole position by almost a second over Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, earning a golden opportunity to eat into that championship gap.
Looking ahead to the grand prix, Antonelli is hoping to channel some past magic. When asked about his chances of a recovery drive to emulate his stunning P19-to-P1 charge on home soil at Monza a couple of rounds ago, he kept his eyes forward.
Thankfully, the pace is there. The car is quick, and the team is ready to do their best as they gear up for a proper fight through the field.
