Kimi Antonelli takes victory in Madrid as Lando Norris suffers virtual safety car heartbreak

Look, sometimes motorsport is just brutally unfair, and Lando Norris learned that the hard way at the Madring. McLaren boss Andrea Stella rightfully called it "a bit of a masterpiece" when the Briton put his machine on pole with a stunning lap in Qualifying, marking his third of the year and the 19th of his career. Norris has already tasted victory in Budapest and Zandvoort, and he had the supreme pace to add another win in this first Spanish Grand Prix at the venue.

He was completely in control and heading toward a thoroughly deserved triumph. But racing gods can be cruel, and a Virtual Safety Car flipped the entire script on its head. While leading comfortably, Norris watched helplessly as Kimi Antonelli and Max Verstappen secured a cheap pit stop under the neutralised conditions.

Just like that, the hard work evaporated. Antonelli capitalized on the cruel twist of fate to inherit the lead and claim his eighth win in 14 Grands Prix this year. Norris was left to salvage what he could, dropping all the way down to lose both the lead and second place, finishing behind Verstappen as well.

It is a bitter pill for a driver who put on a masterclass all weekend only to be undone by timing and yellow flags. Lawrence Barretto, rounding up the winners and losers from the weekend, rightly placed the McLaren star on the painful side of the ledger. Such is the wild nature of racing machines and strategy, where a masterpiece can be undone in a single neutralisation.
