Le Mans legend Jacky Ickx experiences the Genesis Hypercar
It is not often you see a master of endurance racing get behind the wheel of a modern beast like the GMR-001. Jacky Ickx, a man whose name is practically synonymous with the 24 Hours of Le Mans, finally got his chance to pilot the Genesis Magma Racing Hypercar at Circuit Paul Ricard. For those keeping count, the 81-year-old remains the second-most successful driver in the history of the legendary race.
Seeing the car finished in a special livery mimicking his own iconic helmet design was, by Ickx’s own admission, an indescribable moment. Acting as an advisor and ambassador for the Genesis FIA World Endurance Championship programme, Ickx described the experience as one of the most important of his life. He was clearly moved by the human connection, though he did offer a quick laugh to reassure everyone: he certainly isn't planning a return to racing.
Genesis, the luxury division of Hyundai, has made quite a splash in its debut season. After a solid showing at the Imola curtain-raiser and a points-scoring finish at Spa-Francorchamps, the team is now turning its full focus toward the big one at Le Mans this June. It is a fitting partnership, matching a true icon of the sport with the latest piece of machinery to grace the WEC paddock.
