Here is the thing about racing: sometimes a drought breaks in the most dramatic way possible. Alonso Lopez (Italjet Gresini Moto2) finally ended a massive 1162-day wait for pole position at Motorland Aragon, delivering a stunning late lap to stop the clock at 1:49.405. The Spaniard laid down his benchmark on his penultimate tour, and it was just enough to withstand a chaotic finish disrupted by late drama.
That drama belonged to Ayumu Sasaki (Momoven Idrofoglia RW Racing Team), whose huge crash triggered yellow flags and ultimately hampered Izan Guevara (BLU CRU Pramac Yamaha Moto2). Thankfully, Sasaki escaped unhurt from the incident. Guevara had to settle for second, finishing just 0.179s behind the pole-sitter after the flags brought a premature halt to his momentum.
Behind them, the grid filled out with fierce competition. Dani Holgado (CFMOTO Inde Aspar Team) punched in a late effort to snatch third, pushing David Alonso off the front row after Alonso had successfully fought his way through from Q1. Meanwhile, Championship leader Manuel Gonzalez (LIQUI MOLY Dynavolt Intact GP) managed a solid recovery to fourth on his final circulation.
Further down the order, the timesheets tightened up significantly. David Alonso settled into fifth following Holgado's charge, with Collin Veijer (Red Bull KTM Ajo) taking sixth and Barry Baltus (REDS Fantic Racing) heading up row 3 in seventh. Angel Piqueras (QJMOTOR - Reverte – MSI) grabbed eighth, followed by Alex Escrig (KLINT Racing Team) in ninth and Filip Salac (OnlyFans American Racing Team) rounding out the top ten.
The chasing pack packed a punch too. Senna Agius (LIQUI MOLY Dynavolt Intact GP), Joe Roberts (OnlyFans American Racing Team), and Dani Muñoz (Italtrans Racing Team) slotted in right behind. Down in 15th, Ivan Ortola (QJMOTOR - Reverte – MSI) saw his lap cancelled and missed his window to start one final flying before the chequered flag dropped.
Now, the wall awaits Moto2 at Motorland Aragon. Be sure to tune in at 12:15pm local time for the race.
