Michelin eyes a historic milestone at Le Mans
It is honestly difficult to fathom the history Michelin has woven into the fabric of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. They secured the inaugural win in 1923, and now they stand on the edge of a record-breaking 35th victory at this legendary circuit. To claim this landmark, they are relying on the MICHELIN Pilot Sport Endurance range, which will be strapped to the eight partner teams competing in the Hypercar category.
What makes this truly special is the tech hidden in the rubber. These slicks are not just built for speed; they are crafted with 50 per cent renewable or recycled materials, a massive leap from the demonstration tyre showcased on the H24 prototype back in 2021. According to Pierre Alves, manager of Michelin Motorsport’s endurance racing programmes, the focus is on extreme versatility. With the soft compound handling temperatures up to nearly 30°C and the medium working down to 15°C, the engineers are giving teams a serious tactical advantage at La Sarthe.
As the race prepares for its 16:00 CEST start today, the stakes could not be higher. Ferrari enters with three consecutive wins to defend, while Toyota brings the new TR010 Hybrid to the fight. Meanwhile, Cadillac and BMW start from the front row after their stellar performance in Hyperpole. With 18 Hypercars allowed up to 56 slicks and encouraged to push for triple stints, we are looking at over 500 kilometers on a single set of tyres—a testament to the incredible machines we are about to see in action.
