What a masterclass in the wet. Lando Norris proved untouchable in a chaotic, rain-soaked qualifying session at Interlagos, storming to pole position with a blistering 1m 27.470s lap. The McLaren driver handled the treacherous track brilliantly to deny Mercedes duo George Russell and Kimi Antonelli the top spot, sealing his third consecutive pole at the circuit.
Severe weather delays kicked off a dramatic day that turned the grid completely on its head. Long before the lights went green, incoming penalties for Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen, Sergio Perez, and Charles Leclerc meant a massive shuffle was guaranteed for Sunday. Verstappen didn't even bother participating in Q2 knowing his fate, while Leclerc and Russell are both staring down grid drops of 10 and five places respectively.
It's been a long day. It's been a great Qualifying. Obviously, to be on pole again here, it's different conditions to last year but I'm very happy.
Those penalties threw the door wide open for the midfield, and they grabbed the opportunity with both hands. Nico Hulkenberg put together a magnificent drive to sixth for Audi, while Isack Hadjar slotted into seventh. Behind them, Haas driver Ollie Bearman, Aston Martin veteran Fernando Alonso, and Williams' Alex Albon rounded out the top 10 after some of the finest qualifying performances of their respective seasons.
It was a very different story further down the order. Oscar Piastri suffered his second consecutive Q2 exit after a late red flag—triggered when Brazilian rookie Rafael Camara slammed into the barrier—ruined his final flying lap and left Camara stranded in P13. Arvid Lindblad was forced to park his car early due to an order to stop, ending up in P14 behind Piastri and ahead of Williams' Carlos Sainz and the penalised Verstappen.
Earlier in Q1, the torrential downpour caught out Alpine pair Franco Colapinto and Pierre Gasly, who were knocked out together in P17 and P18 ahead of Aston Martin's Lance Stroll. Cadillac had a nightmare session in the challenging weather, with Valtteri Bottas settling for P20 in front of teammate Perez, while Gabriel Bortoleto brought up the rear after hitting the wall.
As the dust settled on a frantic Q3, Russell slotted into second behind Norris despite fuming at his team for telling him to abandon a lap as the rain intensified. Antonelli took third ahead of Leclerc, Lawson, and Hulkenberg. Reflecting on the chaos, Norris said: "It's been a long day. It's been a great Qualifying. Obviously, to be on pole again here, it's different conditions to last year but I'm very happy."
"It's not easy conditions out there, especially when you know it's going to rain a lot more. It was about getting two laps in at the beginning and not making any mistakes, and that's exactly what we did, so it's been a very good day," he added.
