Ryan Blaney dominated the Bass Pro Shops Night Race at Bristol Motor Speedway by leading 202 laps before late-race contact with Carson Hocevar sent his No. 12 Team Penske Ford straight into the outside wall with 43 laps remaining, leaving him unable to continue with a 33rd-place finish. Appearing on Denny Hamlin's "Actions Detrimental" podcast alongside co-host Jared Allen, Blaney looked back at the incident that ruined his night and the subsequent physical fight on pit road.
Initially feeling immediately after the race that Hocevar never lifted and kept coming left despite room being left for the No. 77 Chevrolet, Blaney offered a more measured assessment on the podcast. He described the moment as a 50-50 situation where neither driver wanted to yield the bottom groove, though he maintained he did not deserve to get absolutely trashed. Blaney noted that aside from an incident at Atlanta a year or so ago, he has not had problems with Carson.
The frustration ultimately boiled over on pit road. Handing his phone to crew chief Jonathan Hassler with a simple instruction to hold it, Blaney walked over alone to confront Hocevar near the No. 77 car without his crew. Blaney admitted he grabbed and pushed Hocevar aggressively at the chest, prompting Hocevar to defend himself and land punches to Blaney's cheekbone twice during the scuffle before NASCAR officials and crew members intervened.
Unlike his typical emotional pattern where he vents immediately and calms down quickly, Blaney admitted his anger built up strangely over time Saturday night while he tried to get his broken car started. Reflecting on his role as the 2023 champion and an ambassador for the sport, Blaney expressed regret over his actions for the sake of young fans watching, candidly admitting he went over there and got his ass kicked while eating a two-piece to show his displeasure.
The collision carried heavy championship implications as well. Blaney dropped two positions to sixth in The Chase presented by Mobil 1 standings, putting him 52 points behind the new leader Kyle Larson. Meanwhile, Hocevar secured a third-place finish and climbed to eighth in the standings, sitting 85 points back from Larson with seven races remaining before the Cup Series returns Sunday at Kansas Speedway for Race 4 of The Chase.
