Sebastian Vettel reflects on driving Michael Schumacher's 2002 Ferrari

This Italian Grand Prix weekend served as a celebration of Schumacher's monumental contributions to Ferrari, marking 30 years since he first joined the Scuderia. That partnership started an 11-year spell yielding five drivers' titles and six teams' titles, punctuated by Schumacher taking victory in the 1996 Italian GP. After a period of semi-retirement, he ultimately stepped away from Formula 1 in 2012 following a three-year stint with Mercedes.

Vettel grew up with Schumacher as his ultimate boyhood hero before the two built a genuine friendship during Vettel's own career. Climbing into the cockpit of the machine that helped Schumacher clinch his third title with Ferrari in 2002 was a profound experience. That specific 2002 campaign remains untouched in the history books for a very good reason: the German finished on the podium in all 17 races, a feat that still stands unmatched today.

"First and foremost, it's for my friend and to remember that, which was a very emotional moment," Vettel shared ahead of driving the F2002. He noted that we would all much rather see Schumacher drive today, but looking forward to the moment meant feeling what Schumacher stands for and hearing the car.

Driving a championship-winning Ferrari around Monza in front of the Tifosi adds layers of meaning that go far beyond a simple demonstration run. As Vettel put it, "I love the sport. I don't race anymore, but I still love it, and I probably will love racing as long as I live. That's why I care so much, and these moments are so special."
