Toyota arrives at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya holding a 23-point advantage over BMW in the Manufacturers' standings, with just two rounds left in the FIA World Endurance Championship season. The inaugural 6 Hours of Barcelona could seal both the Manufacturers' and Drivers' Hypercar crowns if the math breaks right this weekend.
Fuji completely flipped the script for the championship. The #8 Toyota crew of Sébastien Buemi, Brendon Hartley and Ryō Hirakawa took a massive tactical gamble in Japan that paid off with a race victory, turning a deficit into a lead in a single afternoon. That late strategic call elevated Hirakawa to the front, where he successfully held off Alpine’s Victor Martins to secure an unexpected win.
That Fuji result reshuffled the entire order. The #7 Toyota driven by Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and Nyck de Vries crossed the line eighth, while the #20 BMW of René Rast and Robin Frijns failed to score for the second consecutive event. That left the title picture razor-thin, with only 20 points separating the top four Hypercar crews in the standings. Buemi, Hartley and Hirakawa sit on 89 points, followed by Conway, Kobayashi and de Vries with 79, Rast and Frijns with 75, and Kevin Magnussen and Raffaele Marciello on 69 points.
This trip to Spain marks the series' first visit to the venue for a race, meaning every team faces a complete blank canvas. No manufacturer has prior data in Hypercar race trim, and no strategist has reference lap times on race fuel loads. Friday's practice sessions will carry immense weight as teams scramble to understand tyre wear and setup before the action gets properly underway.
For Toyota, the scenarios are clear. Should the squad outscore BMW by 22 points or more over the weekend, the Manufacturers' crown is locked up before the finale at Monza. Meanwhile, the final two rounds carry extra emotional weight for Mike Conway, who is set to retire at the end of the 2026 campaign after 12 seasons, 20 victories and two Drivers' crowns in the series.
The event runs from Friday, 16 to Sunday, 18 October 2026, with the six-hour race scheduled to start at 12:00 local time (CEST) on Sunday. Fans can follow the action live on FIAWEC+, streaming every session from Friday practice through to the race finish.
