Here is the thing about pole position: you still have to survive the lights. Mercedes driver Payton Westcott did exactly that, converting her spot at the front into an absolute masterclass of a drive to claim her maiden F1 Academy victory during Saturday's Reverse Grid Race at Zandvoort.
That pole came about after a stroke of fortune when Wild Card driver Zoe Florescu suffered a disqualification from the qualifying session due to a technical regulations breach. Westcott wasted zero time making the most of the opportunity, launching cleanly from the line and keeping her machine completely out of trouble through the initial getaway, two separate Safety Car restarts, and the entirety of the 17-lap distance.
When the dust settled, the Mercedes victor crossed the finish line to take the win by almost two tenths, adding the fastest lap of the race to her dominant resume. Behind her, Alba Larsen and Nina Gademan both put on stellar charges through the field to round out the podium, delivering a brilliant double podium celebration for MP Motorsport.
Their team-mate Esmee Kosterman drove home to P4 to secure her first points of the season. Further down the order, Ella Lloyd delivered a stunning drive by making up six positions to finish fifth, followed by Rachel Robertson in sixth and Megan Bruce in seventh. Ava Dobson wrapped up the points-paying positions by taking P8.
Now, attention shifts immediately to Sunday's upcoming action. Alisha Palmowski will find herself under immense pressure from the chasing pack when she lines up on pole for the Feature Race at 1030 local time.
