Wolff questions the sustainability of Ferrari's aggressive development path

It is a relentless arms race in 2026, and Toto Wolff is watching Ferrari with a very keen eye. The Scuderia have been throwing parts at their car with wild abandon, attempting to bridge the performance gap to Mercedes. However, the Mercedes Team Principal believes this pace is unsustainable. He suspects the Italian team is rapidly burning through their cost cap, leaving them potentially vulnerable as the season grinds on.

While the rest of the pack—including McLaren, Red Bull, and Mercedes themselves—are pacing their development, Ferrari remains the outlier. Wolff admits that while Mercedes has a decent upgrade waiting in the wings, they are choosing to hold back to ensure they deploy it at the perfect moment. He argues that staying within the financial margins is simply too difficult to maintain the frequency of updates Ferrari has shown.

Even with the focus on the budget battle, there is the small matter of the driver on track. Max Verstappen proved to be a handful at the Red Bull Ring, splitting the Mercedes duo and finishing just 1.6 seconds behind winner George Russell. Wolff is not taking anything for granted, noting that the four-time World Champion is currently 98 points behind Kimi Antonelli and remains a factor that simply cannot be underestimated.
