As Motorsport.com reports, Formula 1 has been handed a blunt warning about the future of the Madring circuit, with former driver David Coulthard declaring that returning in 2027 with an unchanged layout would be sheer stupidity. The inaugural race at the semi-permanent venue drew heavy criticism for a distinct lack of overtaking.
Lando Norris had secured pole position for the event, but an ill-timed virtual safety car struck after he had already passed the pit entry, handing the initiative to rivals. Mercedes driver and current championship leader Kimi Antonelli capitalized on the timing to take a cheaper pitstop, ultimately charging to claim his eighth grand prix win of the season.
Speaking on the Up To Speed podcast, Coulthard urged the sport to heed the negative feedback coming from the grandstands. "I think the fans, we've got to listen to them," he stated, noting that if supporters found the spectacle boring, the championship cannot simply dismiss their views.
The former Red Bull driver pointed to comments from Max Verstappen to underline the layout's limitations. Verstappen had remarked that he felt entirely unconcerned when being chased by Lando Norris, noting that defending required nothing more than driving in the middle of the track much like a driver would at Monaco. Coulthard added that expecting a different outcome without altering the track is like putting the same cake mix into the oven.
To fix the problem, Coulthard offered concrete suggestions for layout modifications. He argued that introducing a slower chicane akin to the one at Monza would generate braking zones and encourage overtaking, whereas the current first and second chicanes are simply too fast with too much entry speed. Alternatively, he suggested dropping in a hairpin loop somewhere in that area to give drivers a chance to make a move, while acknowledging that the fast and flowing middle section of the circuit offers little room for intervention due to the need to loop back around.
