Here's the thing: McLaren Racing has officially locked in the third piece of its Hypercar puzzle, and it is a massive signing. Alex Lynn is coming on-board for the squad's massive 2027 FIA World Endurance Championship campaign, marking the famous British brand's return to the peak of the long-distance discipline for the first time in 30 years.
The timing is wild, too. The announcement dropped alongside the news that Lynn is making his seasonal debut in Barcelona this weekend after missing the opening six rounds of 2026 due to neck surgery. But make no mistake: he will depart Cadillac Hertz Team JOTA at the end of the current campaign to step straight into papaya.
Now, the 33-year-old is easily one of Britain’s most accomplished and versatile racing drivers. His résumé is a proper flex, spanning single-seaters—including race-winning success in the FIA Formula E World Championship and roles as a Formula 1 test and development driver—straight into the brutal world of top-level endurance racing.
We are talking about a driver whose career highlights include winning the Macau Grand Prix in 2013, claiming the GP3 Series title in 2014, and conquering the 12 Hours of Sebring in both 2017 and 2022. Add in a victory in the LMGTE Pro class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2020 and the European Le Mans Series’ LMP2 class crown in 2023, and you have a machine of a competitor.
“As a British driver, is there any bigger honour than competing for McLaren Racing? I don’t think so,” Lynn mused. He will join the already announced Mikkel Jensen and Laurens Vanthoor in papaya next year. “It’s a team name that I am incredibly proud to wear on my chest and that I take great pride and responsibility in representing.”
Over recent years, the Essex-born ace has firmly established himself as a leading protagonist at the forefront of global endurance racing across the LMGTE Pro, LMP2, and Hypercar categories. He even secured pole position at Le Mans last year prior to playing a key part in Cadillac’s breakthrough FIA WEC triumph in Brazil.
McLaren Hypercar Team Principal James Barclay is understandably thrilled. “We are delighted to welcome Alex to the team,” he enthused. “He’s a proven winner with extensive experience at the highest level of endurance racing, and his speed, technical understanding and knowledge of the FIA World Endurance Championship will be a real asset to our programme.”
