Albert Park is locked in to host both Formula 2 and Formula 3 once again next season, continuing a run that started when the two categories first joined the Australian Grand Prix support bill in 2023, as Speedcafe reports. That Melbourne round is scheduled as the third event of the year for both championships, sitting directly behind opening weekends in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.
Looking at the wider schedules, Formula 2 will run 14 rounds in 2027. Istanbul and Mexico City join the calendar, while Montreal is kept after coming onboard during the 2026 season. Those two October additions specifically work to cut down the long gap that used to sit between the later stages of the campaign and the final rounds in Qatar and Abu Dhabi. Formula 3 will take on 10 rounds across four continents, with Jeddah, Montreal, and Istanbul all making their debut appearances. That trip to Canada means a first-ever F3 race weekend in North America, and Istanbul gets the honor of hosting the season finale.
Both championships will travel to Melbourne before heading over to Canada. Monaco, Silverstone, Spielberg, Monza, and Madrid are also shared between the two categories later in the year. After Madrid, Formula 2 keeps rolling with visits to Baku, Istanbul, and Mexico City before finishing up with back-to-back weekends in Qatar and Abu Dhabi. Of course, this reshuffle means some classic European tracks miss out, with Barcelona, Spa-Francorchamps, and Budapest absent from both 2027 calendars, while Miami drops off the Formula 2 schedule entirely.
That return to Melbourne brings fantastic news for local fans wanting to watch home-grown talent on track. James Wharton will step up to Formula 2 with Trident next season following his second full Formula 3 campaign in 2026. The 20-year-old finished 17th in the F3 standings with Prema this year, putting 39 points on the board, taking a sprint race win in Barcelona, and wrapping up his campaign with second place in Madrid. His upcoming move to Trident marks his very first full season in Formula 2, though he did make a one-off appearance for the team in Qatar back in 2025.
Wharton's promotion brings a full-time Australian presence back to Formula 2 for the first time since Jack Doohan wrapped up his final year in the category in 2023. Albert Park's ongoing presence on the junior calendars forms part of the long-term agreement between Formula 1 and the Australian Grand Prix Corporation. For anyone wanting to catch the action in person, tickets for the 2027 Australian Grand Prix went on sale this week.
