Here is something completely unique for the 2026 season. The FIA Formula 2 Championship has announced that Round 12 at the Baku City Circuit will be expanded into a massive supersized weekend, featuring an additional Qualifying session and a second Feature Race.
Taking place on 24-26 September, this event stands alone on the calendar. FIA Formula 2 CEO Bruno Michel explained that because the championship acts as the sole support event at the Azerbaijan Formula 1 Grand Prix, the timetable finally allows for the extra sessions to push the entertainment even higher.
Now, let us look at how the machinery will actually hit the track across those days. The revised schedule kicks off on Thursday morning with a single 45-minute Free Practice session, followed immediately on Thursday afternoon by two consecutive 20-minute Qualifying sessions.
Things get even more intense once the racing starts. Friday morning brings the Sprint Race, using a reverse-grid order set by the results of the first Qualifying session. Then, Friday afternoon delivers the First Feature Race, with its starting grid also set by those same results from the first Qualifying session.
The action wraps up on Saturday morning with the Second Feature Race, where the grid is determined by the results of the second Qualifying session. As for the points on offer, pole position in each Qualifying session awards 2 points. Meanwhile, both Feature Races carry the standard points allocation, including 1 point for the Fastest Lap as long as the driver finishes inside the top 10 positions of the final race classification, all in accordance with the FIA Formula 2 Sporting Regulations.
Thankfully, this madness is just for Azerbaijan. The final two rounds of the 2026 season in Qatar and Abu Dhabi will resume with the usual weekend format consisting of one Free Practice, one Qualifying, a Sprint Race, and a Feature Race.
