Here is a shift in the IndyCar landscape that nobody can ignore. Chip Ganassi Racing has officially locked down Christian Lundgaard on a multiyear agreement to pilot the iconic no. 9 PNC Bank Honda, starting with the 2027 campaign. That means a massive changing of the guard, because the 25-year-old Danish racer is stepping directly into the seat vacated by none other than Scott Dixon, who is departing CGR after 24 full-time seasons and six series championships to join Arrow McLaren in 2027.
Lundgaard brings serious credentials to the powerhouse squad. Across 87 career starts in the NTT IndyCar Series, he has racked up 3 IndyCar series race wins, 16 podium finishes, and 21 top-five finishes. His 2026 season was particularly stellar, featuring victories at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course and at Road America, alongside a career-best third-place finish in the championship standings. He also added his very first oval podium result to his resume in 2026, proving he is evolving into a complete threat across every type of track.
We know he's capable of accomplishing even more in the NTT IndyCar SERIES, and we're looking forward to helping him reach that next level with the No. 9 team,
His journey to this point has covered plenty of ground. Before arriving in IndyCar in 2021 with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing—where he took his maiden victory in 2023 at Toronto—Lundgaard won races in Formula 2 and served briefly as a simulator driver for the Alpine F1 Team. He later drove for Arrow McLaren in 2025 before this latest career-defining jump to Ganassi, where he will share the garage with teammates Alex Palou and Kyffin Simpson for the 2027 lineup.
“It is an honor and a privilege to join Chip Ganassi Racing beginning next season,” Lundgaard said. “The fact that it is in the iconic No. 9 PNC Bank Honda makes it even more special. CGR has set the standard in IndyCar for decades, and the opportunity to be part of that legacy is something I've worked toward my entire career.”

Team owner Chip Ganassi recognizes the rare nature of the acquisition. “We know he's capable of accomplishing even more in the NTT IndyCar SERIES, and we're looking forward to helping him reach that next level with the No. 9 team,” Ganassi noted, adding that drivers of this caliber rarely hit the market.
Meanwhile, PNC Bank is keeping its long-running backing intact, continuing a partnership with the team that dates back to 2013 and a primary sponsorship on the no. 9 car since 2018. Lou Cestello, PNC Bank head of regional presidents, voiced enthusiasm for entering this new era with Lundgaard behind the wheel. The next chapter for the no. 9 machine officially begins when the 2027 NTT IndyCar Series season kicks off on Sunday, March 7 on the streets of St. Petersburg, Florida.
