Here is the thing about racing legends: sometimes they finally break through the glass ceiling, and the whole world stops to celebrate. That is exactly what happened when Elfyn Evans rolled into Eldon Square behind the wheel of his GR Yaris Rally1 to a massive hero’s welcome. The celebrations came less than two weeks after Evans and co-driver Scott Martin secured their first world titles in a dramatic final-stage showdown at Rally Italia Sardegna.
Before meeting fans, signing autographs, and posing for photographs, the Toyota Gazoo Racing driver made a special stop earlier in the day at Ysgol Bro Idris. Pupils at the school welcomed him and got a rare chance to see his Toyota up close. Coming from nearby Dinas Mawddwy, Evans wanted to give the youngsters a true taste of the WRC. With Wales no longer hosting a championship round, bringing the Rally1 machine to them meant they could experience the beast in person rather than just watching it flicker across a television screen.
“To have it at home is a bit surreal in a way,” he admitted to BBC Wales.
The packed homecoming itinerary concluded with a wild demonstration at the Marian car park. To top it all off, Wales’ First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth even hopped into the passenger seat for a proper ride.
Supported by Dolgellau Town Council and Gwynedd Council, the gathering brought together family, friends, and devoted fans who had watched his long climb to the absolute summit of the sport. The triumph carries immense historical weight. After finishing championship runner-up five times, Evans finally grabbed the crown on 4 October, making him the first British driver to win the title since Richard Burns in 2001.
