Here is the thing about championship finales: they rarely give you a clean script, but the 2026 Formula 3 title decider in Madrid delivered an absolute classic. Ugo Ugochukwu clinched the Drivers' Championship in the final race of the season, writing his name into the history books by becoming the very first F3 champion from the United States. It was a stunning achievement completed under immense pressure, capping off a remarkable turnaround after he entered the day level on points with his closest rival and having trailed him coming into this weekend.
Out on the asphalt of the Madring, Tuukka Taponen put on a masterclass to take his maiden F3 win and become the first Finnish driver to ever win an F3 race. Starting from pole position in his MP Motorsport machine, Taponen did something no other driver managed all weekend by holding his lead cleanly into Turn 1. From that exact moment, the Finn controlled the gap to Ugochukwu's Campos Racing car right behind him, keeping his rival within touching distance and DRS range throughout the entire race.
Just when things looked settled, a late-race Safety Car completely wiped out the gaps and set up a heart-stopping final lap sprint to the finish line. Thankfully for Taponen, he remained entirely calm and collected under fire, sealing his first victory to close out the 2026 season in style. That brilliant win wasn't just a personal milestone; it also lifted the Finn all the way up to third place in the final championship standings.
Behind the leaders, Ugochukwu crossed the line in P2 on the road, doing precisely what he needed to do to secure the crown. The American finished the season on 159 points, beating Freddie Slater to the title. Slater, racing as a TRIDENT and Audi Development Driver, finished right where he started in eighth position. That leaves the Briton second in the standings on 145 points, just missing out after heading into the final day level on points with the new champion.
Rounding out the podium in Madrid was Pedro Clerot, who added another trophy to his cabinet following his first F3 victory in Feature Race 1 on Saturday. Clerot secured third position on Sunday to round out the rostrum for Rodin Motorsport, capping off a fantastic weekend of racing in Spain.
