That is motorsport at its most brutal. Freddie Slater arrived in Madrid holding a 15-point advantage in the standings over Ugo Ugochukwu, only for a disastrous qualifying phase to derail his championship charge. While Ugochukwu secured fourth and second in the sessions, Slater battled car trouble that left him down in 17th for Qualifying 1 and eighth for Qualifying 2.
On a circuit where passing is notoriously difficult, climbing through the field became an impossible mountain to climb. Both contenders entered Sunday's final Feature Race completely tied on points. When the dust settled, Ugochukwu brought his Campos Racing machine home in second place, while Slater crossed the line seventh. That sealed the championship for the American driver.

"Obviously a little bit gutted with the end result, but fundamentally we had too many things go wrong," Slater said. He pointed to the Feature Race in Monza as the start of their troubles, compounded by the qualifying gremlins in Madrid. "On a track like this it's very difficult to overtake as well, so when you're at the back or in the mid-pack it's always going to be difficult. To be fair, fair play to Ugo and Campos, they had a good weekend."
Despite the heartache of losing out at the final hurdle, the rookie's campaign was undeniably stellar. Over the course of the year, Slater collected one win, three pole positions, and eight podiums. He reflected on the campaign with immense pride, noting how quickly he managed to match the pace of second-year competitors despite his rookie status.
"The pace has been incredible all year, very consistent, and executed all the time," Slater added, paying tribute to his squad by saying, "I couldn't have done that without my team, TRIDENT. So a massive thank you to them."
There is no time to dwell on what might have been, anyway. Slater's 2027 plans are already locked in with a step up to FIA Formula 2 alongside Invicta Racing. For now, a well-earned off-season with friends and family awaits before the hard work of preparing for the next tier begins.
