As Motorsport.com Italia reports, George Russell finds himself dragged right back into a vortex of doubts after managing no better than an eighth-place finish at Austin, his afternoon effectively deadlocked behind Oscar Piastri on a day where his pace on the hard tyres showed fleeting promise.
With the season winding down and Andrea Kimi Antonelli closing in on a potential title next weekend in Mexico, a glaring theme has defined the year at Mercedes. The Italian youngster has repeatedly hauled the team through rough patches while the British driver has found himself wrestling with baffling question marks. Driving styles certainly play a part, but Austin laid bare a deeper trouble: extracting performance from the heavily updated W17 has become an agonizingly narrow task.
Russell did start from sixth on the grid thanks to Lando Norris having a Q3 lap time deleted, but he still sat roughly four quarters of a second off the pace of pole-sitter and teammate Antonelli. Failing to improve upon his Q2 benchmark exposed a growing inability to squeeze raw speed out of the machine when it mattered most. The new aerodynamic package brought extra downforce to the table, yet it also shifted the balance forward and bled rear stability. On a technical circuit like COTA, managing rear tyre temperatures through the final sweeping complexes became a high-wire act.
While Antonelli hunted down a setup direction that unlocked speed in the slow sections during Friday and Saturday, Russell remained stuck. Comparing their telemetry shows the bulk of the deficit arriving between the end of the second sector and the start of the third, where smooth lines and decisive front-end entry dictate everything. Antonelli kept his apex speed without delaying his throttle application, whereas Russell could not find the rhythm in either qualifying or the race.
Things briefly looked up once the hard compound went on, providing vital rear support that let Russell match Antonelli's pace for a spell—though his teammate was busy chasing down Charles Leclerc's Ferrari. But once Leclerc was cleared and Antonelli sailed away into a clean one-stop strategy, Russell became entirely trapped behind Piastri's McLaren. He spent the remainder of the afternoon making vain lunge attempts before finishing just over a second behind the Australian.

Hope that the latest upgrade package would cure his handling headaches has instead backfired by making the setup window paper-thin.
Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff maintains absolute faith in his driver's talent, emphasizing that the team shares the blame for failing to supply a machine that suits Russell's hands.
