Here's the thing about a truly masterclass drive: sometimes a machine and its driver just click from the moment the lights go out. Kimi Antonelli delivered exactly that kind of masterclass at the United States Grand Prix, converting pole position into a stunning victory that leaves him right on the absolute doorstep of his maiden Drivers’ Championship.
Driving for Mercedes, the 20-year-old launched off the line and immediately had to deal with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen right in his mirrors. But there was no cracking under pressure. A brilliantly executed one-stop strategy called by the team let Antonelli simply check out and control the race from the front, turning what could have been a knife-fight into an exhibition of pure pace.

Behind him, the threats simply evaporated. Charles Leclerc brought his Ferrari home in second place, while Verstappen had to settle for third after their respective challenges faded away under the sheer weight of Antonelli’s dominance. After 56 laps around the Circuit of The Americas, the winning machine crossed the finish line a massive 13.078s clear of Leclerc to lock in win number nine of the 2026 season.
“It was the result we needed,” Antonelli said after stepping out of the car. “The whole team deserves it so much and all this time putting in so much work on bringing this new package and finally seeing the result is very pleasant. It was also perfect execution from strategy to call the one-stop so I’m really happy we made it stick, and it was a great team effort.”

That victory pushes his points tally up to a staggering 365. He now sits comfortably with a 123-point advantage over his teammate George Russell, who managed an eighth-place finish in the race. The math is wonderfully simple now: as long as the young Italian doesn’t drop more than 23 points to Russell, or 24 to Lewis Hamilton, at the upcoming round in Mexico City, he will etch his name into the history books as the youngest World Champion in the history of F1.
“We're very close but we’ll try to finish on a high, and hopefully we can clinch it very soon,” Antonelli reflected on the looming milestone. “I’m very excited. I would love to clinch the title in style with a great result. That’s the mindset. That’s always the mindset, and that’s what the mindset is going to be from now until the end of the season. I’m just going to try to enjoy every moment because they’re moments that will always be remembered.”
