As RaceFans reports, Liam Lawson was left wishing he could chase a proper lap time after Racing Bulls ordered him to stay parked in the garage during Q3 at the 2026 United States Grand Prix. Both Racing Bulls drivers managed to fight their way into the final pole-shootout session, but a strategic calculation by the team quickly ended Lawson's afternoon.
With Arvid Lindblad facing a five-place grid penalty and the team acknowledging they were unlikely to out-qualify any of the remaining eight cars on track, Racing Bulls pulled the plug on Lawson's running. The tactical shuffle guaranteed that Lawson would secure ninth on the grid while Lindblad slotted into 14th. If both drivers had posted times and Lawson had beaten his teammate, Lindblad would have been pushed down to 15th for the race.
Lawson explained the team's internal math bluntly, noting that even if they managed to sneak ahead of one of the front-running cars, they were not truly fighting them in Sunday's race. The compromise worked out on paper, but it stung for a driver who felt ready to attack the circuit.
That said, the missed opportunity hurt because of how cleanly the day had started. Lawson reached as high as eighth in Q1 and saved a massive amount of rubber by getting through that opening session on just a single set of tyres, leaving him with two fresh sets for Q3.
“It’s a shame,” Lawson said of the decision to hold him back, pointing out that he was primed to have a proper go at the session. At the very least, the team's defensive chess move left them with a healthy stockpile of fresh rubber for the race.
