What a stunning afternoon of racing we just witnessed at Phillip Island. Marc Marquez (Ducati Lenovo Team) took a brilliant sprint gold, seizing the championship lead in the process, but the real story was the breathtaking, blade-edge war he fought with Jorge Martin (Aprilia Racing) before it all ended in heartbreak for the #89.
From the lights, it was chaos. The #93 nailed his start to grab the holeshot, but a fast-launching Martin carved his way up from row two to second. Then the fireworks really started on Lap 2. Alex Marquez (BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP) slipped past Martin into Turn 10, only for Martin to bite straight back at Turn 1. Behind them, Johann Zarco (Castrol Honda LCR) enjoyed a front-row seat to the madness in fourth, while Pedro Acosta (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) watched the chaos unfold.
Martin wasn't content to just watch. He hunted down the leader, launching an attack at Turn 4 on Lap 3 that failed to stick, before finally making a move at Turn 10 that made it and held. Sadly for Zarco, his brilliant run ended prematurely when a technical issue wiped him out of fifth place.
What followed was an absolute masterclass in heavy-weight combat between the top two in the championship. Martin coughed up the lead on Lap 5 with a mistake at Turn 4, letting Marquez back underneath him. They traded blows relentlessly: Martin grabbed it back into Turn 1 on Lap 6, only to lose the line at Turn 2 and hand the high ground right back to the #93. They repeated the dance on Lap 8, with Martin throwing another block pass at Turn 4 that couldn't quite pull it down.
That was the exact moment the machine bit back. Pushed to the absolute ragged edge, Martin clipped the inside kerb at Turn 7, got completely unsettled heading into Turn 8, and tucked the front entirely. Despite a desperate, fighting effort to save the crash in the gravel, the #89 went tumbling down. Just like that, it was a Marquez family 1-2, with Fabio Di Giannantonio (Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team) ghosting his way smoothly into the podium places.
Further back, Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia Racing) put on a phenomenal charge. Dropping from ninth on the grid to twelfth at the end of Lap 1, the Italian carved his way forward, eventually snatching fourth away from Acosta into Turn 1 with four laps remaining.
Despite late drops of rain and a fierce charging effort from Alex Marquez and Diggia, nothing was going to stop Marc Marquez from claiming his ninth sprint win of the year. Bezzecchi brought it home a brilliant fourth ahead of Acosta, while Ai Ogura took sixth at the line though facing a post-race investigation regarding his tyre pressure. Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) crossed in seventh, Jack Miller (Prima Pramac Yamaha MotoGP) clinched home points in eighth, and Diogo Moreira (Pro Honda LCR) grabbed the final point in ninth, leaving Iker Lecuona (BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP) just outside the scorers in tenth.
Marc Marquez sits back on top of the championship standings as we look toward Sunday. With uncertain weather looming and the final-ever racing action on The Island waiting at 14:00 local time for the 2026 Red Bull Grand Prix of Australia, nobody knows how this story ends.
