Now, that is how you bounce back. Kimi Antonelli is finally feeling comfortable with the latest Mercedes upgrade package, ending Friday's running at the Circuit of The Americas just 0.042s behind Charles Leclerc's benchmark.
Things did not start smoothly for the young Italian, mind you. FP2 began with a loose seat that made his first lap feel like a rollercoaster through the high speed corners. The team lost a little bit of time sorting it out, but the recovery was swift and the feeling inside the machine improved dramatically compared to FP1.
The Silver Arrows brought these updates all the way back in Malaysia to recapture their early-season advantage, though things stalled to the point where George Russell was actually reverted to the older specification in Singapore. With both cars now running the identical W17, the garage has unlocked a whole new level of data collection. A week off after Singapore let the team dig deep into the numbers and figure out what this beast actually needs.
"Having both cars on the same upgrade package helps because we can try lots of different stuff and we can have a better understanding of this package," the 20-year-old explained, adding that they are still figuring out how to put the car in the right window.

All of this arrives against the backdrop of a potential championship coronation, though you would never know it from listening to the pit wall. Deputy Team Principal Bradley Lord pointed out that for Antonelli to clinch the Drivers' Championship this weekend, George Russell would mathematically need to finish ninth or lower—an outcome the squad definitely is not aiming for.
Lord insists they are treating it like any other race, especially with the top four teams locked in an insanely tight battle. Looking at the long run overlays, you literally have to squint to see any real difference between Leclerc, Max Verstappen, Kimi, and Lando Norris. With single-lap pace separated by mere tenths or half-tenths, it is shaping up to be an absolute war between all eight cars.
