Here's the thing about jumping back into the premier class: it is never easy. With the 2026 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship already done and dusted, Iker Lecuona (Aruba.it Racing - Ducati) found himself donning the baby blue BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP leathers. He was stepping in to replace his injured countryman, Fermin Aldeguer, who fractured his hand during the previous Indonesian GP and required surgery on his right hand's first metacarpal bone. Duty called Lecuona back to Phillip Island for the second time in 2026, and the #7 rider wasted no time shaking off the rust.
Getting up to speed on the MotoGP-spec machine is a violent task, but Lecuona worked his way through the practice sessions methodically. He opened with a P17 and P16 in FP1 and Practice, then nudged forward to P15 in FP2. That Practice P16 sent him straight into Q1, where he laid down a 1‘36.296s time to go fourth-fastest. He missed the cut for Q2 by just over eight tenths of a second, but a P14 starting spot on the grid behind future WorldSBK competitor Brad Binder still gave him a platform to fight.
When the lights went out for the Sprint Race, the chaos did the rest. Lecuona clawed his way up to P12 by Lap 2 following retirements from Pecco Bagnaia and Johann Zarco. On Lap 7, another spot fell into his lap when Jorge Martin crashed out from P2. The climb continued on Lap 9 as Raul Fernandez retired and the #27 swept past Diogo Moreira to sit P9. The Brazilian rookie fought back to reclaim ninth on the final lap, but the FIM MotoGP Stewards intervened with a tyre pressure sanction on P6 finisher Ai Ogura, handing him an eight-second penalty that officially promoted Lecuona back to a P9 finish.
Unfortunately, fans were robbed of seeing what else the Spaniard could do on Sunday. Torrential rain and limited visibility meant the medical helicopter could not operate safely, forcing the cancellation of the MotoGP Grand Prix race alongside the Moto2 and Moto3 events.
Thankfully, this story does not end at Phillip Island. Lecuona will get another crack at the MotoGP field because Aldeguer will remain out with injury at the upcoming Malaysian GP at Sepang as well.
