Here's the thing about racing: sometimes a step back from the top tier is exactly where a driver needs to go to hunt trophies. As Motorsport.com reports, John Hunter Nemechek has locked in his plans for the 2027 NASCAR season by jumping to the O'Reilly Auto Parts Series to drive the No. 41 Haas Factory Team Chevrolet with primary sponsorship from Pye-Barker Fire & Safety.
This move comes as Nemechek prepares to depart his full-time Cup ride with Legacy Motor Club at the end of the year, wrapping up a three-year stint driving the No. 42 Toyota. Across nearly 150 Cup starts, he has secured no wins and a career-best points finish of 25th.
Thankfully, his record at the secondary level tells a completely different story. Nemechek is a proven winner in the O'Reilly Series, racking up 11 victories in just over 100 starts and claiming a fourth-place finish in the 2023 championship standings. He also brings deep racing pedigree as the son of 1992 NOAPS champion, Joe Nemechek.
Haas Factory Team President Joe Custer made it clear what they are expecting from the signing. “John Hunter brings the experience and talent we’re looking at Haas Factory Team,” he said, adding that the organization looks forward to competing for wins and championships together. Nemechek echoed that ambition, pointing to the squad's championship-caliber cars and personnel.
The garage at Haas is getting a massive shakeup for 2027 anyway, featuring an entirely new driver lineup as both Sam Mayer and Cole Custer leave the team while the operation expands to a third full-time entry. Dean Thompson has already been announced as one of their incoming drivers for 2027.
Meanwhile, longtime backers are staying the course. Bart Proctor, CEO of Pye-Barker, noted they have been part of Nemechek's journey for a long time and are proud to keep going with him at his new home.
